Beauty Lookbook - 13 ways to add fun to your beauty routine this Spring / Summer
Psst! Cet article est aussi disponible en français.
As we’re all venturing outside a bit more now that the weather’s more clever, it’s time to play up your style and add pops of colour and fun to your face. These 13 looks for all levels of expertise go out of the ordinary and are a perfect addition to any base routine. Prep your brushes and have a party!
Beginner
These looks require minimal products and technique.
1. Freckles
Nothing quite says Summer like the sun leaving it’s speckled mark on your face. Fake the look of sun kissed skin by adding subtle freckles to your nose and cheeks. Products like Freck make it easy to add tiny specks without going overboard. You can also use a very sharp brown pencil (usually for eyes or brows) to create more diffused marks. Full-on tutorial pending.
2. Match your mask
Play matchy-matchy and pair your eyes to your face mask. A simple wash of a coloured shadow all across the lid will do the trick. Perfect for a summer outing at your favourite coffeeshop.
3. Big blush
Another easy and fun way to play up your look can be by amping up your blush. This makeup trend called Igari borrows from Kawaii makeup, a Japanese trend of flushed cheeks and lids (source : ipsy https://www.ipsy.com/blog/igari-makeup). To recreate the look, take whatever formula blush you have on hand (cream, liquid or powder) and swipe from cheek to cheek, and through the bridge of the nose.
4. Mane brows
Channel big Leo energy by brushing your brows up and setting them in place with clear brow gel. If you’re feeling xtra, you can even consider brow lamination, a form of perm which will hold the brows in place for weeks. A real modern, fresh touch, and an instant eye lift.
5. Superbronze
Here’s another super simple trick to summer skin : find a glowy bronzer that’ll give you both colour and sheen. I love the butter bronzer from Physician’s Formula for its unctuous, melt-into-the-skin quality. Apply on forehead, nose bridge, cheeks, shoulders, everywhere, literally.
Intermediate
Don’t be intimidated by the descriptive, these looks are easy to create. They’re a bit less subtle, so they can feel harder to pull-off, but they’re definitely a blast.
6. Popsicle lips
Try these on a hot day, with a real frozen treat OR an actual lipstick. Only apply colour to the centre of the lips and press them together a few times. Yummy.
7. Bring some nuance!
Play up shades by wearing two or three of the same colour at the same time. For example, start with a monochrome lime green lid, add a flick of forest green liner and finish with emerald mascara. It’s all about the shaaaaade(s) baby.
8. Superglow
This is tip #5’s big sister. To create this look, you’ll not only need to apply bronzer all over, but also exaggerated touches of highlighter on the most voluminous zones of the face : cheeks, forehead, chin, brow bone, cupid’s bow, etc. A pop on the top of the shoulders also pairs beautifully with a sleeveless top.
9. Nail patterns
Although you might need to go to a professional for these, patterned nails are such an easy way to play up you look. Find a cool pattern you like and pay a visit to your favourite nail artist (if you’re in mtl, please go to @alexandrine.ongles.cils at @le4035salon.desthetique - I’ve never seen such talent).
10. Glitterati
This is for all my party people. Very finely milled body shimmer is the unexpected touch we all need for faking our own festival in the park. Apply loosely over face, neck and shoulders and let sun sun do the rest of the magic.
11. Fun liner
Sky’s the limit here. Find whichever coloured liner you can get your hands on and have FUN. I’ve included a bunch of of pictures for inspo below. No technique required.
My favourite coloured liners from, glisten cosmetics, can be purchased via this link for a 10% discount on your order. I also make a small commission from every purchase, which helps me keep writing fun, colourful words.
Expert
Wear these if you REALLY want to make a statement. Bring a confetti gun with you for added drama.
12. Prints (again)
Granted, this isn’t a one-and-done but if you’re looking for a fun afternoon activity, pull out your brushes and paint a fun pattern on your lids. Nothing says “I don’t take my self too seriously” quite as smiley face eyelids do.
13. Go natural (but don’t)
If you’re looking for a similar impact (but less work) use eyelash glue to press glitter or dried flowers on your eyes. Super easy, and a beautiful way to bring Spring to your face. Happy outings!
